Essay on Conflict
One important conflict in the play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ that helped me to understand the main idea of the consequences of revenge is the conflict between the house of Capulets and the house of Montagues.

The conflict between the house of Capulets and the house of Montagues was introduced in Act 1 Scene 1 where servants of both houses see each other in the streets and have a fight. Another example of the conflict between the two houses is at the Capulet’s party. Romeo and his friends crash the party but Romeo is recognized by a Capulet called Tybalt. Tybalt tried to kill Romeo there but Capulet stopped him so he challenged Romeo instead. When he challenged Romeo and Romeo refused, Mercutio took up the challenge and was stabbed when Romeo tried to break up the fight then Romeo killed Tybalt. Romeo says to Tybalt in Act 3 Scene 1, “Either thou or I, or both, must go with him.”

The key idea in this play is the consequence of revenge. The conflict between the house of Capulets and the house of Montagues helped me to understand more of the key idea because all of the conflicts in this play had bad consequences. One of these conflicts that had major consequences was when Romeo avenged the death of Mercutio by killing Tybalt who had slain Mercutio. The main consequence of this was that Romeo was banished by the prince from Verona, never allowed in again. This was a major consequence because it meant that Romeo could no longer meet with his wife Juliet so their relationship was ultimately doomed.

The ultimate consequence of revenge was the death of Romeo and Juliet. This was a consequence of the whole conflict between the two houses where they took revenge upon revenge on each other. This was the price they paid for their war. After Romeo was banished, Juliet took a potion to make herself look dead so she could be with Romeo. Romeo did not receive the message from Friar Laurence telling him the plans so he killed himself next to Juliet then Juliet woke up and killed herself seeing Romeo dead. This wouldn’t have happened if the two houses weren’t at war because Romeo and Juliet could have married and had a relationship publicly but because the two houses were at war they could not do this and their relationship was doomed. This was the ultimate consequence in the play ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

In the play ‘Romeo and Juliet’, I think that Shakespeare is trying to tell us that revenge and conflict always end with bad consequences. I think that the message that he tried to portray when he was alive can still be used today.

Essay on Romeo

While reading the play “Romeo and Juliet”, I enjoyed reading about the main character Romeo. He is a teenager in the city of Verona and part of the house of Montagues. He is interesting to read about because he is very impulsive and makes rash decisions all throughout the play. Romeo is also enjoying to read about because he falls in love Juliet who is a young teenager from the house of Capulets which is the rival house of the Montagues and they cannot meet openly for the risk of being killed by opposing houses.

I enjoyed reading about Romeo mainly because of his impulsiveness. His impulsive nature adds tension to the play and makes it more enjoyable than his personality being perfect meaning no extra tension is added. His impulsiveness is shown in act 5 scene where Romeo hears of his Juliet’s passing. He doesn’t wait for any news from Friar Laurence but says, “I will hence tonight.” And goes straight off to Apothecary and buys a dram of poison then goes to Juliet’s tomb thinking she is dead and kills himself next to her.

Another example of Romeo’s impulsiveness is when he killed Tybalt. Tybalt was Juliet’s cousin and a member of the house of Capulets. Like the most of his kin, he would try to kill Romeo and any other Montague on sight. He had previously challenged Romeo to a duel for crashing his family’s party. When Romeo refused to fight his he was outraged. He tried to get him to fight but he didn’t because he had just married Juliet so he was now related to him but Tybalt didn’t know that. When he kept refusing Romeo’s friend took up the challenge. When Romeo tried to break up the fight, Tybalt stabbed Mercutio then ran away. When he returned, Mercutio was dead and Romeo was furious. He said in act 3 scene 1, “Either thou or I must go with him.” He then fought Tybalt and killed him. This taught me a lot about the main idea of conflict and the consequences of it because in result of this conflict Romeo was banished and could no longer see his wife Juliet. So because of his actions his life with Juliet was doomed.

Reading about Romeo also helped me to understand the main idea of conflict and the consequences of it because in many scenes of this play, results of conflict between the two houses have had very bad consequences. For example if the two houses weren’t at war with one and other, Romeo and Juliet could have married and lived in peace without having to keep it from everyone for fear of being disowned or killed. The two houses were at war so there were a lot of consequences. For example Romeo had to meet with Juliet in secret or they would be killed. Another consequence and the largest in the play was that if the two houses weren’t at war, Juliet wouldn’t have needed to take the potion, Romeo would not have brought the poison, Romeo wouldn’t have killed himself and Juliet wouldn’t have killed herself when she saw Romeo was dead. If the two houses weren’t at war then Romeo and Juliet would have lived happily and not have died.

I really enjoyed reading about Romeo because he is very impulsive which adds to the suspense and makes him more interesting. Also after reading about Romeo, he helped me to understand more of the main idea of conflict and the consequences of it.

Romeo Character Analysis
Romeo, in Romeo and Juliet, experiences a love of such purity and passion that he kills himself when he believes that the object of his love, Juliet, has died. The power of Romeo’s love, however, often obscures a clear vision of Romeo’s character, which is far more complex.

It is possible to describe Romeo as lacking the capacity for moderation. Love compels him to sneak into the garden of his enemy’s daughter, risking death simply to catch a glimpse of her. Anger compels him to kill his wife’s cousin in a reckless duel to avenge the death of his friend. Despair compels him to suicide upon hearing of Juliet’s death. Such extreme behavior dominates Romeo’s character throughout the play and contributes to the ultimate tragedy that befalls the lovers. Had Romeo restrained himself from killing Tybalt, or waited even one day before killing himself after hearing the news of Juliet’s death, matters might have ended happily.

Among his friends, especially while bantering with Mercutio, Romeo shows glimpses of his social personal. He is intelligent, quick-witted, fond of verbal jousting (particularly about sex), loyal, and unafraid of danger.
Response to Analysis of Romeo (above)
The writer of this analysis sees Romeo as a young male who acts to the extremes with everything he does. For example when he kills himself straight away when he hears that his true love Juliet has died without first finding out what happened. If he had done this he would have not killed himself for he would have learnt that Juliet was merely faking her death in order to be with him and they would have lived happily ever after. This writer thinks that the youthful aspects of Romeo (indecision, impulse, grand/rash gestures) are constant throughout the story and are his fatal flaws and that he doesn’t change throughout the course of this play.
