Aidan's Space

One main conflict in the film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ directed by Danny Boyle is the conflict between Jamal and the hot of the show ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’. This conflict continues throughout the whole film because Jamal wants to be on the show because he thinks his true love Latika will be watching. The show host on the other hand, doesn’t want Jamal to win because he himself used to be a slumdog and wants to be the only slumdog to become rich overnight.

A technique used in this film to help the viewers to understand the conflict between Jamal and the show host was cinematography. One time cinematography was used to help the viewers understand the conflict was the crane shot when the show host and Jamal walked onstage. It was a bird’s eye view of the stage with the audience cheering around it. This created the image of Jamal and the show host  walking onto an arena to fight each other.

Another major technique that was used to help people understand the conflict between Jamal and the show host is the contrast between their dialogue and acting style. The show hosts dialogue and acting style is very sarcastic and insulting towards Jamal. This is shown when he openly insulting him calling him an “assistant phone basher” and then a “chai-wallah”. What made it worse was he got the audience to laugh with him. Jamal’s acting style and dialogue is completely different to the show hosts. Jamal is very calm and controlled and non-insulting. His calm and controlled character is shown by the way he puts up with all the abuse from the show host like when he was calling him a “chai-wallah” he just sat there not being insulted by it. This shows the conflict between the two characters.

The director Danny Boyle also used music and sound effects to show the conflict between the two characters. Music and sound effects were in the opening scene when Jamal was about to walk onstage. There was the sound of a ticking clock. This showed that Jamal was up against the clock and it was also used to raise the tension levels a lot. Another time music and sound effects were used to show more of the conflict between Jamal and the show host is when they were walking onto the stage together and the crowd started to clap. This contributed to the tension of the scene and the idea of a contest between the two characters. Both of these sounds also go hand in hand with the the cinematography and clearly shows the conflict between Jamal and the show host.

The conflict between Jamal and the host of the show ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ helped me to understand the main idea of how love will overcome all. It helped me to understand this by the use of flashbacks during the game show. This showed me his past as a slumdog and all the things he needed to overcome all of the things he needed to overcome. For example, when his brother Salim raped his one true love Latika. Jamal had to overcome this experience and look back at it to answer the question, “Who invented the revolver?” this helped me to understand the key idea because he went onto the show because of his love for Latika so he had to overcome those bad experiences for love.

The conflict between Jamal and the show host also helped me to understand Jamal’s love for Latika. It helped me to understand this firstly because he went onto the show in the first place because he knew that Latika would be watching. Secondly, Jamal had to revisit all of his most painful memories to answer the questions asked in the show and he did it all because of his love for Latika. Jamal’s love for Latika helped me to understand the main idea because without his love for Latika he wouldn’t have been able to revisit all of those painful memories and get the answers he needed from them. This shows that love does truly overcome all.
